Cores at the University of Utah are managed by either the Health Sciences Center (HSC-managed), the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI-managed) or the Main Campus (Main Campus-managed). Although managed separately, shared efforts campus-wide are coordinated by a committee with representation from each of these three entities, headed by the Vice President for Research. Governance for HSC-managed cores is provided below, whereas governance for HCI-managed cores is provided here.

Dr. Phillips administers the core facilities, they are overseen by a faculty oversight committee. The committee is composed of members of various departments at the School of Medicine, and meets on average twice a year.
Bradley Cairns, Ph.D., Professor | Department of Oncological Sciences |
Carl Wittwer, Ph.D., Professor | Department of Pathology |
David Stillman, Ph.D., Professor | Department of Pathology |
Eric W. Schmidt, Ph.D., Professor | Department Medicinal Chemistry |
Joseph Yost, Ph.D., Professor | Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy |
Matthew Rondina, MD, MS, Associate Professor | Department of Internal Medicine |
Mark Yandell, Ph.D., Associate Professor | Department of Human Genetics |
Wesley Sundquist, Ph.D., Professor | Department of Medicinal Chemistry |
The function of the committee is to evaluate the quality of existing cores, and to recommend both the creation of new cores and the termination of outdated ineffective cores. This is accomplished in part by periodic surveys of faculty needs. The most recent survey was conducted in November 2018. The oversight committee also provides a venue for discussion of the the operation of particular cores, free of conflicts of interest. Recommendations by the oversight committee are transmitted to Will Dere, MD, Vice Dean for Research.
